Customizable Auto Notifications & Actions
Administrators can create customized actions based on information drawn from network elements and alarms. On network elements, these customized actions can launch third-party applications, such as MRTG, Rancid, or any other popular NOC tool that operators wish to use. The user-definable responses to alarm conditions on specific network elements can automate procedures for corrective action based on criteria such as, From/To time, Alarm Count, Alarm Duration, or Day of Week. Additionally, any customizable action can be configured to pass context-sensitive information about the network element to the third-party system, including IP address, equipment name, location, firmware version, or any other piece of information available in the network model with NetBoss XT.
Custom actions can also be triggered by alarms and used to launch documentation or browse to a particular Web site based on specific data within the alarm. Combinations of alarms and notifications in time sensitive hierarchal logic combinations provide specific correlation to define actions for various events. This allows the NOC staff to access their existing knowledge base for troubleshooting or use powerful wiki or other Web technologies and to create new knowledge bases. Additionally alarms from devices that do not inherently support alarm notifications can be added to monitor, for example, server cpu, memory, disk space usage. You can also invoke custom auto notifications and actions, such as user-defined contact lists, to notify the appropriate personnel of alarm conditions delivered through e-mail or SMS text.On-the-Fly SNMP Fault Agents
For SNMP devices without existing agents, an administrator can quickly provide a fault management agent for a new network element type deployed in the network. Now Operators, not coders, can import and load an unlimited number of vendor-specific MIBs and create custom processing for any enterprise-specific events. Processing rules are defined and automatically take effect for any network element being managed. Operators can generate processing for a single trap within a few minutes or set up an entire device within a few hours, saving days of manually coding agents.
Integrated Root Cause Analysis
NetBoss XT Fault Analysis provides users with advanced patentedRoot Cause Analysis capabilities that help network managers isolate network issues in order to respond to them quickly. Understanding the difference between a power supply, transmission, or router problem assures the technician with the right skill set and equipment inventory is dispatched. This reduces the mean time to recovery (MTTR), avoids having to stockpile unnecessary inventory, and provides a higher quality of service to customers. The solution itself is extremely configurable and is able to support in-domain and cross-domain event correlation simultaneously in multiple network technologies. Through the deployment of one or more pre-configured network packages proven solutions can be developed with minimal time and staff resources.

Key Capabilities

Network Operations Centers can receive anywhere from thousands to millions of alarms in a day. In a typical failure scenario the cascading effect of every Network Element and application in the surrounding area reporting problems can overwhelm the most seasoned operations staff. Vast lists of Fault and Performance events must be interpreted, filtered, investigated or processed, in order to gain an understanding of what is happening in the network and the impact on customers and services. It has become increasingly difficult to analyze ever growing alarm volumes while trying to navigate between network and service views. Operations staff often use manual processes, such as searching through lists of faults or comparing performance data, in an effort to identify and understand underlying network problems. Finding the impact of those problems on dependent services becomes a background task at best and identifying their effect on SLAs often only becomes apparent at the next reconciliation point. Labeling the identification of service disruption as a background task and adopting an ‘after the event’ reconciliation with SLAs is simply unacceptable as Multi-Vendor, Multi-protocol Next Generation services require superior customer satisfaction.
A breakthrough in Correlation and Root Cause Analysis
NetBoss Technologies has designed a solution integrated into our next generation manager of manager “NetBoss XT” that utilizes an automated three pronged approach that:
Applies traditional filtering and pattern matching, stream-based correlation at multiple points in the information flow to minimize “disinformation,” and alarm “noise”,- Utilizes Multi-Vendor, Multi-protocol Network Element mediation agents with an underlying patented topology model creating an automated real-time detailed understanding of relationships and behavior patterns across your network.
- Combines inference engine with technology-specific correlation rules that identify network problems and continuously determine service impacts.
Combines inference engine with technology specific correlation rules that identify network problems and continuously determine service impacts.
This provides significant value:
1. Do more with less to reduce cost
|
2. Improve accuracy and reliability
|
3. Get proactive by indentifying trends early
|
4. reduce the noise of non-informative alerts and events

Stream Correlation – pre-processing
Stream Correlation provides a comprehensive event stream correlation capability to a Network Management System. Fundamentally, Stream VP operates simultaneously but independently on multiple streams of events from point or adjacent sources in the monitored network, without the need to provide the network inventory information required to support more complex topology correlation scenarios.
Event Volume Reduction
Stream Correlation is used to reduce the volume of events delivered from sub-ordinate systems to a Network Management System. Your operations staff can monitor more technologies (more alarms) more effectively with fewer staff, so they can continue to monitor legacy systems and bring on next generation technology without increasing headcount.
Network Administrators can filter out event noise for the entire staff. This first level filtering eliminates the need for everyone to filter common alerts, eliminating time consuming and inconsistent operator views. Operators can then filter alarms based on individual needs to further minimize the noise without deleting valuable information.
Topology Correlation
NetBoss XT is different in that the state propagation mechanisms and connectivity information already exist inside the system in a pre-built and automatically maintained topology model that accurately reflects the structure of the real network. The immediate benefit of this approach is that it vastly reduces the number and complexity of the rules required to handle a failure condition. The same scenarios that currently require 60+ rules each can now be managed easily with very few high level rules.
Being a topology-based solution, it is capable of modeling networks at a physical, logical and service level, enabling it to effectively ‘drive’ a Service Level Agreement (SLA) layer. It combines the use of data-driven network models with simple but powerful high-level rules to achieve sophisticated correlations.
This combination of expert system technology with a powerful yet flexible network topology model automatically:
- Pinpoints network problems resulting in, Faster MTTR, fewer Truck Rolls, all with existing staff
- Identifies the impact in terms of dependent network and service components affected by a problem, so your call centers can be proactive to service outages
- Delivers problem notifications to source and/or external systems that result in automated actions
The NetBoss Integration Advantage
NetBoss’ creates feature-rich configuration discovery agents, leverages the topology model defined in NetBoss XT, and automatically displays mission-critical root cause and service impact information in Executive Dashboards to deliver unparalleled functionality. This is achieved through the following functionality:
- NetBoss Agents provide multi-threaded agents that support configuration discovery. This can dynamically drive the device configuration and topology model in an automated fashion after network add/move/changes. Industry standards that enable configuration discovery (e.g. 3GPP and TMF-814 CORBA) and vendor specific features such as Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) are supported
- NetBoss XT’s model-based architecture enables linking devices into a topology. This can be automatically driven by data (e.g. spreadsheets or inventory systems) or linked via point and click by the NetBoss Administrator
- Simply clicking on the NetBoss XT RCA tab provides the NOC staff with correlated root cause and service impacting events and filters sympathetic alerts from these scenarios. NetBoss Executive Dashboards summarize this information for Operations Management & Executives
